In a Russia-controlled area, a Huge Dam named Nova Kakhovka has been destroyed. As a result, about 8 villages have been fully flooded and more are expected to fall under the situation.
On 6th June, The wall of this significant dam collapsed after an unknown explosion. It sent water gushing downstream toward Kherson, which led officials to order the residents to evacuate.
The bridge was strategically important to Ukraine. It was built in 1956 and was 30m tall and 3.2 km long. The bridge was created as a part of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant. Even Europe’s largest Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant gets its cooling water from the reservoir of the dam. As per sources, The reservoir holds as much water as the Great Salt Lake does in Utah.
The Crimean Peninsula, which was annexed by Russia in 2014, and Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant also under the control of Russia, also receive water supplies from the reservoir.
Although still, it’s uncertain how extensive would the flooding be it could affect the settlement which is home to 16,000 people. People living in some parts of the city of Kherson are warned to evacuate.
As per President Volodymyr, The river has also been contaminated by tones of Industrial Lubricant and another 300 tones are at risk of leaking. The dam was very important and served numerous purposes, it’s still not clear what caused the break. While both Militaries are accusing each other.
Previously, When Russia annexed Crimea, they blocked the channel carrying water from the dam. But, later they reopened it and without the dam water levels are in jeopardy along the channel.
