The recent TRAI data has shown some gloomy results for the telecom companies JIO and Vodafone Idea, while Airtel has been shown to have gained a massive customer base.
The TRAI data for the quarter ending in March 2022 reveals some staggering numbers for the top mobile service providers of India.
According to the TRAI data, Reliance JIO, and Vodafone Idea have been showing a month-on-month decline in their wireless subscribers while Airtel showed gains in the same segment for the month of February.
This makes it the 3rd consecutive month of decline in customer base for JIO, which for your information, is currently the largest mobile service provider in the country.
Reliance JIO has lost 3.6 million of its subscriber base leaving the total count now, to 402.7 million.
Surprisingly though, JIO has continued to retain and increase the number of active subscribers and has leveraged the percent figure of active/total subscriber base from 78% to 94% currently, all in the span of 7 months.
Vodafone Idea has also reported a loss of over 1.5 million user count leaving its total subscriber count to 263.5 million.
One of the only mobile service companies that has shown bright prospects is Airtel, which has added 1.59 million new users to its subscriber base, leveraging the total count to 358 million.
Tariff Hike led to Sim consolidation in India
It should be noted that, towards the end of the month of November, all mobile companies hiked their tariffs in prepaid plans by 20%.
The move was heavily criticized by users all across India.
Consequently, many users in India opted to cut off or pause recharges for their alternative connections, thus leading to a phenomenon known as SIM consolidation.
It's a sudden reduction in the customer base for mobile service providers.
The phenomenon has also indirectly resulted in shrinking the overall subscriber base of the country by 3.7 million.
However, even after the tariff hikes, and the sim consolidation, the carriers have still managed to sustain and increase their ARPU(Average revenue per user), a key metric for profitability.
