Jaya Verma Sinha makes history as the first woman to lead the Indian Railway Board, with a career spanning over three decades in the railways and notable achievements like inaugurating the Maitri Express during her tenure in Bangladesh.

A government notification stated, “The popular Maitri Express which runs from Kolkata to Dhaka was inaugurated during her tenure in Bangladesh. The committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Jaya Verma Sinha, Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) Member Operations and Business Development) Railway Board to the post of Chairman and the CEO…..with effect from the date of assumption on or after September 1, 2023,”

Sinha holds the position of Member (Operations and Business Development), the Railways Board. Will succeed Anil Kumar Lahoti as the first woman chairperson and CEO of the apex decision-making body of Indian Railways.

She joined the Indian Railways in 1988 and is currently a member of operations and business development. She was even in the news recently as she explained the complex signaling system after the tragic incident at Balasore which took about 300 lives away.

Reportedly, She assumed Charge on Friday, September 1st and her tenure will continue till August 31st, 2024. Her career in railways has spanned Northern Railways, SE Railways, and Eastern Railways. She has even worked as a railway advisor in the high commission of India. During her time in Bangladesh, the popular Maitri Express was inaugurated.

This is the first time a woman will be heading lead to Railways of India, This event signifies a pivotal juncture in her 166-year history. Established in 1905, Indian Railways has become a key Institution which is been functioning for over 118 years. This appointment not only signifies Jaya’s exceptional capabilities but also salutes the increasing recognition of gender diversity with respect to leadership roles.
