Let’s face it — most people don’t think of the last gasp of a legendary GTO when they think of a 1974 model. It wrapped up the original GTO tale where it began, but it wrapped up with little fanfare. For one owner, though, he saw something behind the white wall tires. After purchasing a plain-jane ’74 coupe, back in 1982, he finally realized his transformation 40 years later. Now a once forgotten classic has received a second chance as a Pro-Touring track-ready machine and it’s currently being auctioned on Bring a Trailer.

Engine Swap That’ll Wake the Neighbors

Out with the stock 350 V8 and in with the 487 cubic inch stroker that shatters what you thought this GTO could do. This hand-built monster has nothing but high-performance parts from aluminum heads to Holley Sniper EFI to a hydraulic roller cam to MSD ignition. It is believed to produce 600 horsepower though it doesn't have a confirmed dyno number to back it up.

This is the kind of engine that does more than just move the car - it rattles the earth and makes itself known.

What Makes This One Hit Different:

  • Built be fast and last
  • Immediate throttle response
  • Custom exhaust for the signature V8 sound
  • Electronic fuel injection for modern reliability

Modern Suspension, Classic Looks

You wouldn't necessarily expect a big American muscle car like this would be all about straight line speed and no corners, but not with this build. The GTO has a Detroit Speed front subframe with a Quadralink rear suspension setup, and it has coilovers. That means it stays flat in corners, is well behaved on tight roads, and is far more composed than the GTO was back when it was factory-stock.

The car also has fat 19'' wheels tucked under mini-tubbed fenders, giving it a low, wide stance with an aggressive appearance.

Key Upgrades:

  • Detroit Speed front suspension
  • Adjustable rear coilovers
  • Four-wheel Wilwood disc brakes
  • Tucked rear wheels for aggressive stance

Inside the Cabin: All Work, No Tricks

The interior is basic, but intended. The car's previous bench seats have been disposed of and replaced with Corbeau racing buckets. A complete roll cage, Pro-Comp gauges, a Momo steering wheel, and a B&M shifter, make the interior truly driver focused. There is no touch screen or extravagant climate control functions, but that is the point. The car is built to go, not to stream podcast episodes.

However, it does have added comforts like a simple cd stereo and a set of cleaned black carpeting that give it just enough comfort for weekend cruising.

A Passion Project 40 Years in the Making

This re-build is more than parts and power. It is about a connection. The seller bought the car in 1982, and it sat quietly in his garage until he was finally able to devote the time, money, and vision to it in 2021. Since the complete build in 2021, he has driven it 2400 miles, keeping the car in a relatively showroom quality condition. This is more than 40 years of ownership, transformed into a moving story.

This isn't just a car, it is many decades of patience, skill, and love culminating into one beautiful piece.

Want It? Here's How To Get It

This GTO is currently live on Bring a Trailer, ath the auction is set to close on June 22, 2025. Given its quality and history, the car is generating a lot of interest. If you are a collector or gearhead, or just appreciate a good comeback story, this build is worth a peek.
