Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD has announced a breakthrough in charging technology, unveiling a system that can add 400km (249 miles) of range in just five minutes. This new "Super e-Platform" charging technology boasts peak speeds of 1,000kW, making it twice as fast as Tesla's upcoming V4 Superchargers, which will max out at 500kW.
The ultra-fast charging system will first be available in BYD's Han L sedan and Tang L SUV, both priced at around 270,000 yuan ($37,330). To support the rollout, BYD has committed to building over 4,000 fast-charging stations across China, although a specific timeline for completion has not been disclosed.
Speaking at the launch event in Shenzhen, BYD founder Wang Chuanfu highlighted the company's ambition to eliminate charging anxiety for EV users. “We aim to make EV charging as fast as refueling a petrol car. This is the first time the industry has achieved megawatt-level charging power,” he said.
Currently, most BYD owners in China rely on third-party charging networks. By investing in its own infrastructure, the company aims to enhance the convenience and appeal of its EVs.
This development comes as BYD continues to challenge Tesla’s dominance. In 2024, BYD sold 1.76 million cars, just behind Tesla’s 1.79 million, with the majority of BYD’s sales coming from the Chinese market. The company is also pushing innovation in other areas, recently unveiling a roof-mounted drone launcher developed in partnership with DJI.
With its latest advancements in charging speed and infrastructure, BYD is positioning itself as a formidable competitor to Tesla, bringing EV technology closer to mainstream adoption.
