Ford Motor Company has announced a recall of approximately 1.1 million vehicles in the United States due to a software problem affecting the rearview camera system. The defect may allow the camera image to freeze, lag, or not display at all while in reverse, which would increase the risk of a crash. This software defect affects several models of Ford and Lincoln produced between 2021 and 2025, per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Which Models Are Affected?

The recall involves various models of Ford, and Lincoln, including:

Ford models:

2021–2024 F-150

2021–2024 Edge

2022–2024 Expedition

Lincoln models:

2021–2023 Nautilus

2022–2024 Navigator

2023–2024 Corsair

Each of these vehicles incorporate the SYNC4 infotainment system, which includes the software with the camera problem.

What's the Problem?

The problem comes from a software bug in the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) that controls the rearview camera display. The software glitch could cause the camera image to freeze, delay or not show at all when the vehicle is shifted into reverse. In this situation, it can make it impossible for a driver to see behind them, which could lead to accidents. Ford has noted one minor crash with property damage related to the problem whilst noting no injuries.

How Will Ford Fix the Issue?

Ford intends to fix the issue with a software update to the APIM software. They will be sending notification letters in the mail to owners of affected vehicles starting June 16, 2025. The software update will be free of charge and be completed via one of two methods:

Over the Air (OTA) Update

If the vehicle has OTA capability, the software update can be downloaded and installed remotely without having to visit a dealership.

Dealership Visit

Owners can make an appointment with a Ford or Lincoln dealership to install the software update with a technician. If you need to reach Ford customer care, you can call 1-866-436-7332. If you would like to contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline you can call them at: 1-888-327-4236 or visit their website at nhtsa.gov.

Prior Recalls and regulatory actions

Ford have had issues with rearview camera systems before. While the original camera problems seen here are in 2023, Ford did issue some sort of recall of 289,000 vehicles for rearview camera issues in 2024, and has had a $165 million fine for a delayed response to the prior defect involving 620,000 cars earlier.

Conclusion

The recall of over 1 million vehicles by Ford exemplifies the importance of operational rearview camera systems for safe drivers. Ford has taken swift action to rectify the software glitch, and thus, it is advising affected vehicle owners to claim their free update. Motorists should investigate if their vehicle was included in the recall and follow the advice provided to confirm that the safety system of their vehicle is functioning properly.
