Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, has confidently predicted that the Indian automobile industry will become the largest in the world within the next five years. Speaking at the NDTV Auto Conclave 2024, the Minister discussed the future of the auto sector and the transformation underway.
Gadkari emphasized that the shift from fossil fuel-powered vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs) will not only be environmentally beneficial but also economically viable. He highlighted that this transition will create more jobs, increase exports, and boost business growth. “I am confident that within five years, our Indian automobile industry will be number one in the world,” Gadkari said, adding that India has the necessary workforce, raw materials, and other essential resources to achieve this goal.
The Minister also announced a new initiative aimed at improving vehicle fitness centers and driver training facilities across the country. A combination of these centers will be launched to streamline driver training and vehicle fitness checks. Gadkari revealed that a formal announcement of the scheme would be made soon, with plans for each district to have multiple fitness and training centers. The initiative is designed to ensure vehicles are safe for the road while also contributing to the vehicle scrapping process.
The vehicle fitness centers will play a key role in the vehicle scrapping policy introduced in 2021. The policy aims to eliminate old, unfit vehicles from the roads, thereby reducing pollution and encouraging the use of cleaner transportation methods. Gadkari noted that the new fitness certificate issued by these centers would facilitate the scrapping of outdated vehicles.
The broader goal of these initiatives is to improve environmental sustainability while enhancing the efficiency of the automobile industry. By promoting the use of electric vehicles and reducing the number of polluting old vehicles on the roads, the government aims to create a cleaner and more sustainable future for India’s transport sector.
With these developments, Nitin Gadkari’s vision for a leading Indian automobile industry seems set to take shape, promising a more advanced, eco-friendly, and job-creating sector in the coming years.
