Tesla, the world’s leading electric car company, is finally setting up shop in India. The company has finalized a deal to open its first showroom in Mumbai, at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), a prime commercial area. The showroom will cover 4,000 square feet on the ground floor of a commercial tower.
Tesla Pays Premium Rent for BKC Showroom
According to reports, Tesla is paying ₹900 per square foot as rent, amounting to nearly ₹35 lakh per month. This is one of the highest rents for a commercial space in India.
Second Tesla Showroom Planned in Delhi
Tesla is also finalizing a second showroom in Delhi, as part of its expansion plans in India.
Tesla’s India Strategy: Affordable EVs & Local Production
Tesla plans to enter the Indian market with an affordable electric car, priced around ₹21 lakh. This model, possibly named Tesla Model 2, will be a smaller version of the Model Y. The company may also introduce the Model 3, which is currently its most affordable car globally.
CEO Elon Musk has hinted at Tesla launching an affordable EV, increasing speculation about its India debut. The company sees India as a key market, especially as global EV sales slow down and competition from Chinese brands rises.
Government Support & Local Production Plans
The Indian government has been updating its EV policies to attract foreign investment. New rules favor companies like Tesla, provided they set up local manufacturing plants.
Tesla’s Rapid India Expansion
After Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Elon Musk in the US, Tesla accelerated its India plans. The company recently posted job openings for 13 roles in India, signaling a strong commitment to establishing its business here.
With its first showroom in Mumbai and a second planned in Delhi, Tesla’s entry into India is now a reality.
