Students at Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi have started an indefinite protest against the university’s disciplinary action on two PhD scholars. These scholars are accused of organizing a demonstration last year.
The issue is related to the "Jamia Resistance Day" event held on December 15, 2024. This day marks the 2019 protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), when Delhi Police allegedly entered the campus and used force against students inside the library.
The university's disciplinary committee is set to review the matter on February 25. However, students say the action is unfair and an attack on their right to protest.
Left-affiliated student groups, including AISA, are leading the protest. They are demanding that the university withdraw the disciplinary measures and stop suppressing student activism. Holding banners that read "Dissent is the legacy of Jamia" and "Restore Campus Democracy," protesters argue that their rights to speak and gather are being violated.
On Tuesday, the situation became more tense when AISA claimed that its national president, Neha, was detained by Delhi Police for standing in solidarity with the protesters. However, police stated that Jamia’s administration had removed her and brought her to the police station.
In a statement, AISA condemned the university’s actions, calling them "undemocratic and authoritarian." The student group said they were peacefully remembering the 2019 police action but were once again met with suppression.
The university administration has not yet responded to the protesters' demands.
