The recent "rationalization" in educational textbooks has led to the removal of several chapters, including those on the Periodic Table, Democracy, and Sources of Energy.
The removal of the evolution of humans already sparked concern this year. Now, As per newly released textbooks, it is revealed that the chapter on the periodic table is a part of syllabus cut. As per sources, it is done in an attempt to reduce the burden on students.
In addition, chapters on environmental sustainability and energy sources have been omitted. Further, In Political Science chapters on Democracy and Political Parties are also part of the drop in the latest revision.
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has stated that these omissions were necessary in light of the ongoing pandemic and aimed to alleviate the pressure on students. Some of the reasons listed were difficulty level, irrelevant content, and overlapping context.
However, Students who will further choose science and other relevant fields for further study in 11th and 12th will get to learn about them.
With this, NCERT has raised concerns among some scientists and educators. About 1800 experts had written open letters to express their concern over the rationalisation exercise.
According to Jonathan Osborne, a science-education researcher at Stanford University, California, periodic table is one of those greatest achievements of chemists which explains how building blocks of life combine to generate substances having vast properties.
