Actor Aubrey Plaza and filmmaker Jeff Baena had reportedly been separated for four months before Baena’s tragic death by suicide in January 2025. According to a report by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, the couple split in September 2024, and Plaza had grown increasingly concerned about her estranged husband’s well-being in the months leading up to his passing.
Baena, 47, was found deceased near the Hollywood Hills on January 3, 2025. The report confirms that his cause of death was suicide by hanging. Plaza, 40, last heard from him that morning via text message.
Concerns About Baena’s Mental Health
The coroner’s report states that in October 2024, Baena made alarming comments, prompting Plaza to ask a friend to check on him. Following this incident, Baena began attending therapy but had no known history of previous suicide attempts. He reportedly struggled with sleep issues.
After their separation, Plaza moved to New York while Baena remained in Los Angeles. Following his passing, Plaza and Baena’s family released a joint statement calling the loss an “unimaginable tragedy” and thanking those who offered their support.
Plaza and Baena’s Relationship
Plaza and Baena had been together since 2011 and married in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Plaza once described their decision to wed as a spontaneous choice made during quarantine.
Baena was known for his work as a writer and director, including films like Life After Beth, The Little Hours, Horse Girl, and Spin Me Round. He also co-wrote I Heart Huckabees and created the comedy anthology series Cinema Toast.
Plaza, best known for Parks and Recreation, has since gained critical acclaim for roles in The White Lotus, Emily the Criminal, and Megalopolis.
Last month, Plaza made a public appearance at Saturday Night Live’s 50th-anniversary celebration, introducing musical guests Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard.
