US millionaire Bryan Johnson, known for spending millions on his health, had to cut short his appearance on Nikhil Kamath’s podcast in India. The reason? Air pollution gave him a rash and irritated his eyes and throat.

‘The Air Pollution Gave Me a Rash’

During the recording of ‘WTF is’, Johnson said the air quality inside the studio was poor because outside air was being circulated. Even the air purifier he brought didn’t help. He shared that the Air Quality Index (AQI) was 130, and PM2.5 levels were 75 µg/m³, which he compared to smoking 3.4 cigarettes in 24 hours.

Johnson, who was on his third day in India, said, “The pollution was so bad that my skin broke out in a rash, and my eyes and throat burned.” He was surprised that people in India seemed unaffected, even though science proves pollution is harmful. He added, “Cleaning up air quality would improve India’s health more than curing all cancers.”

How Does Air Pollution Affect Skin?

Experts confirm that pollution can damage the skin, leading to breakouts, rashes, and conditions like acne, eczema, and premature aging.

Dr. Gunjan Verma, a dermatologist at Manipal Hospital, New Delhi, explains that pollutants enter the skin through direct contact, hair follicles, or even inhalation. These particles cause oxidative stress, which leads to skin inflammation and irritation.

Dr. Puneet Khanna, a lung specialist, added that many patients suffer from itchy eyes, throat irritation, chest tightness, and a persistent cough due to air pollution. Symptoms can last for weeks.

Should We Be Concerned?

Johnson’s experience highlights a serious issue—air pollution can harm both skin and overall health. While many people may not notice the effects immediately, experts say it’s important to protect ourselves by wearing masks, using air purifiers, and limiting outdoor exposure during high pollution days.
