Vicky Kaushal’s latest film, Chhaava, has taken the box office by storm, becoming the biggest Hindi opener of 2025. Released on February 14, the historical drama, directed by Laxman Utekar, earned a whopping ₹31 crore on its first day, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. This marks the highest opening for Vicky in a lead role.

Breaks Previous Records

Before Chhaava, the biggest Hindi opener of 2025 was Sky Force, featuring Akshay Kumar and Veer Pahariya, which collected ₹15.3 crore on its first day. However, Sky Force faced controversy over allegations of block bookings, where producers buy tickets to inflate numbers. The film eventually grossed over ₹111 crore during its run.

For Vicky Kaushal, Chhaava has also surpassed his previous best opener, Bad Newz, which made ₹8 crore on its first day. What’s even more impressive is that Chhaava’s opening-day earnings are nearly equal to the combined total of Vicky’s last six theatrical releases:

  • Bad Newz—₹8 crore
  • Sam Bahadur—₹5 crore
  • The Great Indian Family—₹1 crore
  • Zara Hatke Zara Bachke—₹5 crore
  • Bhoot Part One: The Haunted Ship—₹5 crore
  • Uri: The Surgical Strike—₹8 crore

Strong Occupancy in Major Cities

Chhaava performed exceptionally well in the Mumbai region, where it had over 1300 shows with an occupancy of around 42%. In Delhi-NCR, it also had around 1300 shows, with an occupancy rate of 27%.

Minimal Competition from Hollywood

The film faced some competition from Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World, which released on the same day. However, the superhero movie only managed to collect ₹4.3 crore in India across multiple languages, making it a weak competitor.

Chhaava Set to Dominate

Other recent Bollywood releases like Loveyapa (₹7 crore in a week) and Badass Ravikumar (₹8 crore in a week) have failed to make an impact. With Chhaava dominating theaters, these films are likely to lose screens in the coming days.

With a strong opening and positive audience response, Chhaava is expected to continue its successful run at the box office.
