Chinmayi Sripaada Slams Kapil Sharma for ‘Racist Jibes’ on Atlee: ‘This is Not Surprising’
Filmmaker Atlee's recent appearance on The Great Indian Kapil Sharma Show has sparked a controversy, after a joke made by comedian Kapil Sharma was accused of being racially insensitive. Singer Chinmayi Sripaada has now spoken out, criticizing Kapil for allegedly making fun of Atlee's appearance based on his skin color.
Atlee, who was on the show to promote his upcoming film Baby John, was joined by the movie’s team, including Varun Dhawan, Keerthy Suresh, and Wamiqa Gabbi. During the show, Kapil made a comment that seemed to poke fun at Atlee’s looks. He jokingly asked, “When you get to meet a star for the first time, do they ask, ‘Where is Atlee?’”
Atlee, however, responded with grace. He said, “In a way I understood your question. I’ll try to answer. I’m actually very thankful to AR Murugadoss sir because he produced my first film. He asked for a script, but he didn’t see how I was looking or whether I’m capable of it or not. But, he loved my narration. I think the world should see that. We should not judge by appearance. You have to judge by your heart.”
Despite Atlee’s calm response, the clip soon went viral on social media, and many viewers felt that Kapil’s comment was derogatory, with some accusing him of making a joke about Atlee’s skin color. Singer Chinmayi Sripaada was one of the first to speak out, expressing her disappointment over the incident.
Chinmayi took to social media, saying, “This is not surprising. People have been making jokes about skin color for years, and it's become a norm in the entertainment industry. It’s time we stopped normalizing such behavior.” She added that comments like these can perpetuate harmful stereotypes and should not be overlooked.
Will they never stop these crass and racist jibes at his skin color in the name of ‘comedy’?

Someone with the amount of influence and clout like Kapil Sharma saying something like this is disappointing and unfortunately, not surprising. https://t.co/63WjcoqHzA
Kapil Sharma has yet to publicly address the backlash. Meanwhile, both Atlee and the show's producers have remained silent on the issue. The controversy has sparked a wider conversation on the importance of sensitivity and respect in the entertainment industry.
