Eric Dane Reveals ALS Diagnosis, Plans to Keep Acting
Actor Eric Dane has been diagnosed with ALS but remains committed to his work and family.
Eric Dane, best known for playing Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey's Anatomy and Cal Jacobs on HBO's Euphoria, has shared that he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive and currently incurable neurological disease.
Despite the difficult news, the 52-year-old actor is staying positive and plans to continue his acting career. Dane will begin filming Season 3 of Euphoria on April 14.
Staying Strong with Family by His Side
Dane credited his family—actress Rebecca Gayheart and their two daughters—for their strong support. In a statement, Dane expressed gratitude for their love and understanding as they face this new reality together. He also asked for privacy while he and his family adjust.
Though Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018, recent reports suggest the couple may have reconciled. In March 2025, she filed to dismiss the divorce petition. The two have remained close and committed to co-parenting throughout the years.
What Is ALS?
ALS, often known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It causes the gradual weakening of muscles and eventually affects a person's ability to move, speak, eat, and breathe. Symptoms can begin with twitching, slurred speech, or weakness in the hands or legs.
There is currently no cure for ALS, but treatments are available to slow its progression and help manage symptoms.
Eric Dane Will Return for Euphoria Season 3
Even with his diagnosis, Dane is focused on continuing his work. He will reprise his role as Cal Jacobs in the upcoming season of Euphoria, which begins filming this month. His dedication to his craft in the face of adversity is already inspiring fans and fellow actors.
