Actor Val Kilmer, known for playing Batman in Batman Forever and Doc Holliday in Tombstone, has passed away at the age of 65. His daughter, Mercedes, told The New York Times that he died from pneumonia on Tuesday in Los Angeles. Kilmer had been battling throat cancer for several years.
Kilmer rose to fame in the 1980s and 1990s with hit movies like Top Gun, Real Genius, Willow, Heat, and The Saint. He played Jim Morrison in The Doors, a role that showcased his deep commitment to acting.
In 1995, he stepped into the role of Batman in Batman Forever, replacing Michael Keaton. Though his performance received mixed reviews, the film was a success. However, he did not return for the next Batman movie, and George Clooney took over the role.
Kilmer’s career later faced challenges due to his reputation for being difficult on set. Despite this, he continued acting in films like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Déjà Vu, and The Prince of Egypt (as a voice actor). In 2021, a documentary about his life, Val, was released, showing his personal journey and struggles.
Kilmer was married to actress Joanne Whalley, but they divorced in 1996. He is survived by their two children, Mercedes and Jack.
