Producer Credits the "Drag Gods" for Making It Happen
Tom Campbell, executive producer of the series, shared how surreal the experience was.
“It always feels like the drag gods are looking out for us,” he told Variety. “Getting Liza? I bow to the drag gods.”
When it came time to plan the finale, Campbell said many names were tossed around. But RuPaul made the vision clear:
“Let’s get Liza.”
At first, the idea seemed out of reach. Minnelli, a true legend of stage and screen, was considered “un-gettable.” But fate stepped in. She was enjoying renewed attention thanks to her PBS documentary, Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story, and a cover story in New York Magazine.
Even better? Her management team were fans of Drag Race — and saw the heart behind the show. Conversations followed, and Minnelli said yes.

Campbell says the moment Minnelli walked on stage was filled with warmth and joy.
“She radiates kindness and love — and is clearly surrounded by people who adore her,” he said.
Among those in her circle was singer Michael Feinstein and a surprise guest — her brother Joey Luft, who doesn’t often appear in public.
“She kept asking for him: ‘Where’s Joe? Come up here, Joe.’ She was so caring and protective.”
For the Drag Race team, her presence meant more than star power. Liza Minnelli has long been a symbol of strength and support for the LGBTQ+ community, raising millions for AIDS research and standing proudly beside the community through decades of change.
“She’s always been there for us,” said Campbell. “She’s family.”
