The Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai, known for hosting comedians like Kunal Kamra and Samay Raina, has announced its closure after facing backlash from Shiv Sena workers. The controversy erupted after Kamra’s stand-up act, ‘Naya Bharat’, where he allegedly made remarks about Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde.

What Happened?

After a video of Kamra’s performance went viral, Shiv Sena workers vandalized The Habitat in Khar, claiming Kamra insulted their leader. The venue had already been in the spotlight earlier when podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia’s remarks in the show India’s Got Latent sparked outrage.

Following the attack, The Habitat issued a statement expressing concern over repeated targeting:

"Artists are responsible for their content. We provide a space for expression, but repeated incidents force us to rethink our operations."

Why is The Habitat Shutting Down?

Due to continuous backlash and vandalism, the club decided to shut down indefinitely. They stated:

"We are shutting down until we figure out a way to continue without putting ourselves at risk."

Political Reactions & Legal Action

  • Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel filed a police complaint against Kamra.
  • Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske warned Kamra, stating, “You will be forced to flee India.”
  • Aaditya Thackeray condemned the attack, calling it a "cowardly act.”

As the political storm intensifies, The Habitat’s closure raises concerns about freedom of expression in India’s comedy scene.
