Netflix’s new British drama Adolescence has taken the world by storm, including India. Within just three days of its release, the four-part series amassed 24.3 million views and topped streaming charts in 71 countries. The show, featuring Stephen Graham, Ashley Walters, Erin Doherty, and newcomer Owen Cooper, has sparked discussions worldwide, especially among Indian audiences.

Stephen Graham’s Reaction to India’s Response

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Graham shared his shock at the show’s massive popularity in India. “I got a text from a mate telling me how big Adolescence is in India. And my first response was, ‘Hold on, did you say India?! Did I hear you correctly?’ Apparently, it’s really striking a nerve there.”

Indian celebrities and filmmakers, including Alia Bhatt, Trisha Krishnan, Hansal Mehta, and Anurag Kashyap, have praised the show on social media. Graham described the show’s global success as “a ripple effect that has been unbelievable.”

The Inspiration Behind ‘Adolescence’

Graham co-created Adolescence with writer Jack Thorne, inspired by the rise in violent crimes among teenagers. He developed the idea while driving with Philip Barantini, who later directed the series.

The show follows 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper), who is arrested for the murder of a classmate. Graham, who plays Jamie’s father, wanted to explore why young boys commit such crimes. He emphasized, “These aren’t men committing these crimes. They’re boys.”

Why ‘Adolescence’ Stands Out

One of the show’s unique elements is that all four episodes are filmed in a single take, adding intensity to the storytelling. Since its release on March 13, Adolescence has received widespread praise from Indian audiences and critics alike, igniting deep discussions about youth violence.

Graham remains amazed by the overwhelming response, especially in India, and is grateful for the show’s global reach.
