You HAVE to See This BBC Crime Drama!
Okay, so you know how much I love a good crime drama, right? Well, get this: the BBC's new show, This City Is Ours, is seriously gripping. It's set in Liverpool, and let me tell you, the gritty atmosphere is totally palpable. Sean Bean plays Ronnie Phelan, this aging crime boss, and honestly, he's just *amazing* in it. The eight-part series premiered to amazing reviews, and I can see why.
A Family Business (That Goes Very Wrong)
The whole thing centers around Michael Kavanagh (James Nelson-Joyce), Ronnie's loyal right-hand man. He's got this dream of escaping the criminal underworld and building a life with his partner, Diana (Hannah Onslow). But then, Ronnie announces his retirement – and everything goes sideways. Ronnie's ambitious son, Jamie (Jack McMullen), wants the throne, and that sets off a whole chain of betrayals and power struggles. It's fascinating how the show blends the brutal reality of the drug trade with the complexities of family – the love, the loyalty, and, of course, the devastating betrayals.
It’s all so intense! You know how sometimes things just spiral out of control? That's exactly what happens here. I was completely hooked, guessing at every turn who was going to betray who next! The stakes are unbelievably high.
The Costumes? Let's Just Say...
The acting is incredible across the board. I loved hearing Laura Aikman (Rachel Duffy) talking about her character's "intense orange snakeskin jacket"— she called it "a bridge too far," which I thought was hilarious! Hannah Onslow also raved about the costumes, although she wasn’t allowed to keep any. Sean Bean himself described the show as "Unique. Exciting. New," and, honestly, that pretty much sums it up. Viewers have been praising the realistic portrayal of Liverpool's criminal scene and the powerful performances. Some people mentioned the sound mixing could use a tweak, but honestly, that’s a minor quibble for me.
Where Can I Watch It?
This City Is Ours is currently streaming on BBC iPlayer, with new episodes airing weekly on BBC One. Seriously, you have to check it out. It's already generating a ton of buzz, and for good reason. You won't be disappointed!
