Shrek fans were excited to see the first teaser for Shrek 5, but a surprising change in animation has left many feeling uneasy.
Universal Pictures released the teaser on Thursday (Feb 27, 2025), confirming the movie’s Christmas 2026 release. The film brings back Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), and Cameron Diaz (Fiona), along with Zendaya as Felicia, one of Shrek and Fiona’s kids.
Strange Animation Style Leaves Fans Confused
The teaser shows Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and Felicia using a magic mirror to ask, “Who’s the fairest of them all?” The mirror hilariously responds with images of Shrek posing, dancing, and even having abs, shocking the characters.
However, fans were more focused on Shrek’s new look, which features wrinkles on his forehead and Donkey’s greying fur. Many viewers felt this made the characters look older and unfamiliar.
- “Why does Shrek look so old?” one fan asked.
- “What’s up with their faces?” another wrote.
- “Did they get Botox? Why are they like that?” a user questioned.
Some fans also compared the new rounder, softer animation style to the backlash over Sonic’s design in the 2020 Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
- “Please change the animation style before it’s too late,” one fan pleaded.
- “This looks so cheap,” another added.
Shrek 5: What We Know So Far
Eddie Murphy confirmed in June 2024 that work on Shrek 5 had already started, with him recording his lines. Walt Dohrn will direct the movie, having previously worked on the Shrek franchise as a writer and artist.
Despite the concerns about animation, fans are still thrilled about Shrek’s return after 15 years. Shrek 5 is set to hit theaters in December 2026.
