The Paper is a new workplace comedy from Greg Daniels (creator of The Office) and Michael Koman (known for Nathan For You). This time around, the focus shifts from a paper supplier to a small, offbeat newspaper in the Midwest known as The Truth Teller. It's set in Toledo, Ohio, and uses the same mockumentary style that made The Office so popular.
The plot focuses on a small team trying to keep print journalism alive in a digital world. It's chaotic, funny, and a bit emotional too — you get the feeling these characters really care about what they’re doing, even if everything feels like it’s falling apart around them. The vibe is similar to The Office, but with a fresh setting and a new kind of workplace drama.
Some key points:
-
It’s a mockumentary-style comedy
-
Takes place inside a struggling local newspaper
-
Set in Toledo, Ohio
-
Centers around collaboration, fresh starts, and the struggle to keep print journalism alive.
A Cast Full of Underdogs
The cast feels like a group of people you can really root for. Domhnall Gleeson plays Ned, the editor who refuses to give up on the idea that The Truth Teller can still succeed. His character believes in the power of journalism, even when everyone else seems to have moved on. Gleeson joked that some people might confuse him with Meredith from The Office because of his red hair — but no, he’s playing a brand-new character here. No Irish accent either.
Oscar Nuñez, best known as Oscar from The Office, is also part of the cast. He made a joke at a recent NBCUniversal event that he asked to be in a big city, so they sent him to Toledo — which apparently has three times the population of Scranton.
Here’s the full lineup:
-
Domhnall Gleeson as Ned
-
Oscar Nuñez returning to comedy
-
Sabrina Impacciatore as Esmeralda
-
Gbemisola Ikumelo, Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, Tim Key
Gleeson described the cast as a group of underdogs trying to keep journalism alive, and honestly, that’s the kind of energy people seem to miss in modern comedies.
When to Watch and Who’s Behind It
The show is set to premiere in September 2025 on Peacock. The release month was confirmed by Sabrina Impacciatore, while Oscar Nuñez added a hopeful, “We can do it, you guys!” during the announcement. The enthusiasm from the cast makes it seem like they truly believe in the show.
Even though there’s no confirmation that characters from The Office will appear, there’s still a strong connection. Angela Kinsey and Jenna Fischer recently visited the set, and Angela said on the Office Ladies podcast that it felt emotional — a lot of the original crew from The Office is working on this project too, which made it feel like a reunion.
The production team behind The Paper includes some very familiar names:
-
Greg Daniels and Michael Koman serve as both writers and executive producers.
-
Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant also serve as executive producers.
-
Howard Klein and Ben Silverman are part of the team as well
-
The show is produced by Banijay Americas
With this kind of lineup, both in front of and behind the camera, The Paper could be the next big thing for fans who loved the mix of awkward humor and heart that The Office was known for.
