A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 hit Nepal early Tuesday morning, shaking many areas in North India, including Delhi-NCR and parts of Bihar. The tremors, felt at 6:35 AM, caused people to rush out of their homes in fear. Thankfully, no damage to property has been reported so far.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake's epicenter was 93 kilometers northeast of Lobuche, near the Nepal-Tibet border. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the quake’s location at latitude 28.86 degrees North and longitude 87.51 degrees East, at a depth of 10 kilometers. Lobuche, a small town in Nepal, is located close to the Khumbu Glacier and southwest of Everest Base Camp.
Nepal is in a region where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, making it prone to frequent earthquakes. The tremors were strongly felt in Bihar, where people were seen gathering outside their homes and apartments.
Emergency response teams in Nepal and India are closely monitoring the situation. Officials have urged everyone to stay calm and be ready for possible aftershocks.
Two more smaller earthquakes were reported in the same region later in the morning. A 4.7-magnitude quake occurred at 7:02 AM, and a 4.9-magnitude quake followed at 7:07 AM. Both had their epicenters near the original quake, with depths of 10 and 30 kilometers, respectively.
Authorities in Nepal and India are on alert, ensuring safety measures are in place as they assess the impact of the quakes.
