A 22-year-old man from Bengaluru was arrested for allegedly extorting over Rs 2.5 crore from his girlfriend by threatening to release her private videos and photos. The accused, identified as Mohan Kumar, used intimate footage he had secretly recorded of the 20-year-old woman to blackmail her into transferring large sums of money.
According to the police, the woman and Kumar had been in a relationship after reconnecting a few years ago, having studied together at a boarding school. Kumar promised to marry the woman and invited her on trips, during which he secretly filmed intimate videos and photos while assuring her that they would remain private.
However, things took a dark turn when Kumar began to blackmail the woman. Fearing that he would release her private videos and photos, the woman transferred a staggering Rs 2.57 crore to Kumar over several months, as per the police report. The woman first transferred Rs 1.25 crore from her grandmother's account to Kumar's account. Later, she also handed over Rs 1.32 crore in cash on multiple occasions to prevent the release of her intimate content.
But the blackmail didn’t stop there. Kumar continued his coercion, demanding luxury watches, jewelry, and even a high-end car from the woman. Unable to cope with the constant harassment, the victim eventually approached the Bengaluru police and filed a complaint.
The police took swift action, and Kumar was arrested under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), also known as the Indian Penal Code. During their investigation, the authorities recovered Rs 80 lakh of the extorted money from Kumar.
Speaking about the case, Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda said, "A complaint was registered by a girl that she was exploited by her boyfriend. This was a well-planned crime. The accused extorted Rs 2.57 crore, of which Rs 80 lakh has been recovered. We have arrested the person. We are investigating the accused further."
The case has raised concerns over the growing instances of cyber blackmail and exploitation, highlighting the need for greater awareness and stringent measures to prevent such crimes.
