Bengaluru reports two suspected cases of HMPV infection in babies. Health officials await confirmation while conducting further tests and monitoring the situation.

Bengaluru has recently reported two suspected cases of HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) infection in babies who have not traveled recently. The cases have raised concerns, and while local health officials have flagged the situation, confirmation from the state health department is still awaited.

The first case involves a three-month-old baby girl who was admitted to Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru. She had a history of bronchopneumonia, which is an infection in the lungs. After testing, the baby was diagnosed with HMPV. Fortunately, the baby has since been discharged from the hospital and is doing well.

The second case is an eight-month-old boy who was also admitted to the same hospital on January 2, 2025. He showed symptoms of fever and difficulty breathing. Tests later revealed the presence of HMPV. However, health officials are still conducting further tests to determine the level of the virus and confirm the diagnosis. According to BBMP (Bengaluru Bruhat Mahanagara Palike) Health Commissioner Suralkar Vikas Kishore, the hospital identified the infection, but more tests are being done to check the virus load.

Multiplex PCR testing, which helps detect specific microbial RNA or DNA, confirmed that the virus was present in the baby. However, the health department is still working to confirm if HMPV is the cause. A senior official from the Health and Family Welfare Department mentioned that many different respiratory viruses are currently spreading in the city. As soon as the HMPV infection is confirmed, more tests, health protocols, and control measures will be put into place.

Health authorities are monitoring the situation closely and taking necessary precautions to protect the public. The cases serve as a reminder to stay cautious, especially with respiratory illnesses, and to follow any health guidelines issued by local authorities.
