A 30-year-old woman in East Bengaluru had a scary experience on Thursday night when she jumped out of a moving auto-rickshaw to escape from a driver who seemed dangerous. She had booked the ride using the Namma Yatri app, traveling from Horamavu to Thanisandra.
At first, everything seemed fine, but soon the driver started taking a route she didn’t recognize, heading toward Hebbal instead of her destination. She asked him why he was going the wrong way, but he didn’t answer. The woman also noticed his red eyes and thought he might be drunk. Despite asking him to stop, the driver ignored her.
When the auto reached Nagavara, the driver suddenly took a turn toward a flyover that wasn’t part of the normal route. Feeling scared, the woman decided to jump out of the moving auto when it slowed down near a ramp. She wasn’t hurt, but the driver tried to get her to get back in. She refused, paid for the ride online, and took another auto to go home.
Her husband, Azhar Khan, shared the story on social media (X, formerly Twitter) and tagged the Bengaluru police. He said this was a serious issue for women’s safety, especially at night. “If this can happen to my wife at 9 PM, it could happen to other women too,” he said.
Even though the woman didn’t immediately report the incident to the police, her husband’s post got attention. Namma Yatri contacted him to offer help, and the police also reached out. This situation has raised concerns about the safety of women using auto-rickshaws, especially at night.
