In the 2025 Union Budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced several key initiatives for the education sector aimed at preparing India’s youth for global opportunities. The government will establish five National Centres of Excellence for Skilling, focusing on equipping the younger generation with the necessary skills to become major players in global manufacturing. These centres will facilitate global skilling partnerships, further positioning India as a leader in the manufacturing space.

Additionally, the government plans to set up a Centre of Excellence for artificial intelligence in education with an allocation of ₹500 crore. This initiative aims to enhance India’s role in AI development and research.

Sitharaman also emphasized the expansion of infrastructure at Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), particularly for those established after 2015. The total number of students in IITs has doubled over the past decade, and additional capacity will be created at five IITs to accommodate 6,500 more students. This includes expanding hostel and other facilities, such as at IIT Patna, ensuring that these institutions continue to foster world-class education.
