In the 2025 Union Budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the launch of a groundbreaking Nuclear Energy Mission with an allocation of ₹20,000 crore. This mission will focus on the research and development (R&D) of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), which are seen as a safer, more sustainable solution to meet India’s growing energy demands. The ₹20,000 crore allocation will ensure that significant progress is made in developing these reactors, with five indigenously developed SMRs expected to be operational by 2030.
The Nuclear Energy Mission aims to enhance India’s energy security by reducing dependence on traditional energy sources while contributing to the country’s environmental sustainability goals. With advancements in nuclear technology, the government envisions creating a robust energy infrastructure that meets the needs of the future. This move is in line with India’s broader commitment to clean energy and climate change mitigation.
The development of SMRs will also create new opportunities for jobs, innovation, and growth in the country’s nuclear energy sector, positioning India as a global leader in advanced energy technology.
