The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has started an investigation into a gold smuggling case after actress Ranya Rao was arrested at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) caught Rao on Monday night with 14.2 kg of gold worth ₹12.56 crore when she was returning from Dubai.
The CBI is working with DRI to investigate the smuggling network. They are looking into the role of airport staff and other government officials who may be helping smugglers bring gold into India.
As part of their investigation, the CBI sent two teams to Bengaluru and Mumbai airports to gather more information. Authorities are also looking into whether there are more smuggling groups active at these airports.
Ranya Rao, who is the stepdaughter of a senior police officer, has admitted to carrying 17 gold bars. The DRI also found gold jewellery worth ₹2.06 crore and ₹2.67 crore in cash at her home. The total value of the items seized is ₹17.29 crore, which has impacted the gold smuggling network.
The arrest of Ranya Rao has raised concerns about gold smuggling at airports, where international gangs seem to be using local officials to bring in gold. The CBI is continuing to investigate and may make more arrests soon.
This case highlights the ongoing issue of gold smuggling in India and the need for stronger measures to stop it at airports.
