New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is on track to win the Delhi Assembly elections, ending its nearly 30-year wait to return to power, according to early counting trends on Saturday.

The BJP is leading in at least 50 out of 70 seats, while the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is ahead on just 19 seats. To form the government, a party needs at least 36 seats.

AAP’s Declining Performance

AAP, led by Arvind Kejriwal, had won by a huge margin in the last two elections—63 seats in 2020 and 67 seats in 2015. However, this time, the party is struggling as votes are being counted.

A Historic Comeback for BJP?

Delhi last had a BJP Chief Minister in 1998 when Sushma Swaraj held the post for 52 days. Since then, the party lost six consecutive elections—three to Congress (1998, 2003, 2008) and three to AAP (2013, 2015, 2020).

This time, the BJP ran an aggressive campaign led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, promising "parivartan" (change). It focused on allegations of corruption against AAP, including the "Sheesh Mahal" controversy and the liquor scam. BJP also highlighted key civic issues like water scarcity, pollution, and poor roads.

The party assured voters that it would continue AAP’s welfare schemes but with better transparency, along with its own new promises.

If the early trends hold, Delhi will see a new government after 10 years of AAP rule.
