In a remarkable milestone for medical donations in Delhi, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) recently witnessed its first-ever skin donation.

This extraordinary act of generosity occurred on the 16th of October when a woman, who had suffered a fatal accident after falling from her husband's motorbike, was brought to the AIIMS Trauma Center.

Tragically, she breathed her last in the hospital, and it was in this moment of grief that her husband made an altruistic decision.

The grieving husband, with the compassionate guidance of the ORBO Transplant coordinator, consented to donate not only his wife's eyes but also her skin. He expressed his sentiment, stating, "If her skin and eyes can save a life and make someone happy, then it will be a tribute to her."

This act of kindness has the potential to save lives, particularly in a country where over 7 million people suffer from burns annually. Dr. Maneesh Singhal, the head of AIIMS' plastic surgery department, explained that the donated skin would undergo a meticulous six-week processing period to ensure it is infection-free.

The preserved skin can be utilized for up to five years.

Medical experts emphasized that skin can be harvested from a deceased donor within eight to ten hours of their passing, with preservation under specific conditions, involving an 85% glycerol solution and temperatures between 4 to 5 degrees Celsius.

This noble gesture not only commemorates the departed but also extends a lifeline to those in need.
