Dust Storm Creates Panic at Delhi Airport, Delays Over 50 Flights
Passengers Stuck in Long Queues as Weather Causes Flight Disruptions
A strong dust storm swept through Delhi on Friday evening, creating serious disruptions at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. The poor weather conditions delayed at least 50 flights, leaving thousands of passengers stranded in long lines, confused and frustrated.
The chaos was most visible at Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, where the crowd became so dense that several travelers described it as a “stampede-like” situation.
Poor Visibility Forces Air Traffic Control to Act
According to airport officials, the dust storm led to poor visibility on the runway, forcing Air Traffic Control (ATC) to slow down flight operations for safety. The delays mostly affected domestic flights, although a few international flights were also held back.
Flights by major airlines such as IndiGo, Vistara, and Air India experienced delays, and many travelers missed their connecting flights as a result.
Passengers Share Frustration on Social Media
As the situation worsened inside the airport, many passengers took to social media to express their frustration. Videos and photos showed passengers sitting on the floor, stuck in long lines at check-in counters and security checkpoints.
Several posts criticized the lack of clear communication from airlines and airport authorities, and some travelers said they didn’t receive timely updates or assistance.
“It felt like a stampede. People were panicking, and no one was giving clear instructions,” said a traveler who was flying to Mumbai.
Airport Authorities Respond
Delhi airport issued a statement asking passengers to remain calm and said efforts were being made to restore normal operations. The airport also advised travelers to check their flight status online or with their airline before leaving home.
“We’re monitoring the weather and working with airlines to manage the situation,” the statement said.
Dust Storms Common During Pre-Monsoon Season
Weather experts say such dust storms are common in Delhi during the early summer or pre-monsoon period. These storms can carry high-speed winds and dust, often lowering visibility and disrupting air travel.
Officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that Friday’s storm was part of a larger weather system moving across northern India.
Airlines Advise Caution
Airlines operating out of Delhi have asked passengers to arrive early at the airport, stay alert for updates, and prepare for possible further delays as weather conditions remain unpredictable.
