Earthquake of 3.7 magnitude strikes Kutch, Gujarat; no damage reported. Highlights frequent seismic activity in the high-risk region. Stay prepared!

An earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale shook Gujarat’s Kutch district on Monday morning, as reported by the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR). The tremor occurred at 10:44 am, with its epicenter located 76 kilometers north-northeast of Lakhpat in the district. Fortunately, there were no reports of casualties or damage to property, according to the district administration.

This marks the second earthquake of magnitude 3 or higher in Kutch this month. On December 7, the district experienced a tremor of 3.2 magnitude. Last month, Kutch recorded an earthquake of magnitude 4.0 on November 18. Additionally, Patan district in north Gujarat was struck by a 4.2 magnitude earthquake on November 15, showing increased seismic activity in the region.

Gujarat is considered a high-risk area for earthquakes. Over the past 200 years, the state has witnessed nine major earthquakes, as per data from the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA). These events highlight the importance of disaster preparedness in the region.

Seismologists attribute the frequent tremors in Kutch to its location in a seismically active zone. Residents are urged to remain cautious and follow safety protocols to minimize risks during such natural events.

What Residents Should Do During an Earthquake:

  1. Stay Calm: Avoid panic and act quickly.
  2. Take Cover: Duck under sturdy furniture like tables and protect your head and neck.
  3. Stay Indoors: Avoid running outside during shaking; falling debris can be dangerous.
  4. Prepare Emergency Kits: Keep essential items like water, food, and first aid ready.
  5. Follow Official Updates: Pay attention to announcements from local authorities.

While there was no significant damage in this instance, these recurring earthquakes serve as a reminder for communities to stay vigilant and prepared for emergencies.
