According to the food ministry, the government has already purchased 55.8 million tonnes of rice for the current 2022–2023 marketing season, providing 1.22 crore farmers with an MSP of Rs 1.7 lakh crore in return. In comparison to the previous year, when 18.8 million tonnes of wheat were purchased, 26.2 million tonnes of wheat have been purchased so far in the rabi marketing year of 2023–24 (April–March).
As per the ministry, "adequate food grains stock is maintained in government granaries with the current procurement of wheat and rice." It was observed that the country is comfortably positioned to satisfy its requirements for food grains as a result of the combined stock position of wheat and rice reaching 57 million tonnes.

Paddy and wheat are purchased by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and state-run organizations as part of a price support program. Through milling, paddy is obtained and transformed into rice.
The current kharif marketing season, which runs from October to September, saw the procurement of 83 million tonnes of paddy (55.8 million tonnes of rice), according to the government.
The report as per PTI even stated that approximately The procurement exercise has benefitted 1.22 crore farmers. The minimum support price (MSP) that has been given to them is around Rs. 1,71,000 crore. Further, the present wheat procurement procedures have already helped 21.29 lakh farmers, it added, with an MSP outflow of almost Rs 55,680 crore.
Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana have each contributed a significant amount to the purchase, with purchases totaling 12.12 million tonnes, 7.09 million tonnes, and 6.31 million tonnes, respectively. The ministry has stated that the government has made sure that all conditions are met for simple procurement procedures.
