Kottayam, Kerala – Five senior nursing students at a government college in Kottayam have been arrested following allegations of horrific ragging against their juniorsz. The disturbing details of the abuse, which reportedly spanned three months, have sparked outrage and renewed calls for stricter measures against ragging in educational institutions. The victims, three first-year nursing students from Thiruvananthapuram, bravely came forward to file a police complaint detailing the systematic torture they endured at the hands of their seniors at the Government Nursing College in Kottayam. Their complaint to the Kottayam Gandhinagar police outlined a pattern of brutal physical and mental abuse that began in November 2024. According to police reports, the first-year students were subjected to unimaginable cruelty. The accused seniors allegedly forced them to strip naked and then hung dumbbells from their private parts. In another shocking act of violence, the victims were stabbed with compasses from geometry boxes, causing injuries. The torment didn't end there. The seniors then applied lotion to the open wounds, intensifying the pain. When the victims cried out in agony, the seniors callously smeared the lotion into their mouths.
The accused also allegedly filmed these horrific acts of abuse, using the recordings to blackmail and silence the victims. They threatened the juniors with serious repercussions, including ruining their academic careers, if they dared to report the abuse. The complaint further alleges that the seniors regularly extorted money from the juniors every Sunday, demanding funds to purchase alcohol. Students who refused to pay were subjected to physical beatings. The prolonged torment took a severe toll on the young students. Finally, one student, unable to endure the harassment any longer, confided in his father. His father, recognizing the gravity of the situation, encouraged him to seek justice by reporting the abuse to the police. Following the formal complaint, the college swiftly suspended the five accused third-year students. They were subsequently arrested under the Anti-Ragging Act and are currently in police custody. They are expected to be presented before a magistrate soon.
