IIT Madras opens its first campus outside India in Zanzibar, Tanzania, fostering educational collaboration and strengthening the strategic partnership. Launching programs in October 2023.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) will open its first campus outside of India in Zanzibar, Tanzania, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Wednesday 5th July saw the signing of this agreement in the presence of S Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, and Hussein Ali Mwinyi, the president of Zanzibar. Jaishakar is in Tanzania for four days.

The MEA reports that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been inked to create an IIT Madras campus in Zanzibar, an archipelago off the coast of East Africa that is also a part of Tanzania.

Zanzibar will host the first IIT campus to be established outside of India, according to the MEA. It stated that an MoU had been signed between the Zanzibar Ministry of Education and Vocational Training and the Indian Ministry of Education, IIT Madras.

This action encourages educational collaboration and opportunity in the area and represents a substantial extension of the famed IIT system outside of Indian boundaries.

The MEA stated that “this campus is emblematic of the long-standing relationship between India and Tanzania and serves as a reminder of the importance India focuses on forging human connections throughout Africa and the Global South.”

According to the MEA, "Recognizing the strategic partnership between Tanzania and India, the relationship of educational partnership has been formalized by signing the document which provides the framework for the parties to detail out the establishment of the proposed campus of IIT Madras in Zanzibar-Tanzania, with plans to launch programs in October 2023."

According to National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, “the universities performing well will be encouraged to open campuses in other countries.”

IIT Madra in Zanzibar, the campus is said to open in October 2023 and will admit 50 students in its undergraduate program, and 20 students in the post-graduate program. After this initiation, Zanzibar will become one of the international campuses apart from Abu Dhabi and Kuala Lumpur.

The Joint Defense Cooperation Committee (JDCC) conference, which was conducted for the second time this year in Arusha, Tanzania, on June 28 and 29, was hosted by India and Tanzania. Discussions for enhancing security in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) took place between the two nations during the summit. The emphasis on fostering collaboration in this important marine area was highlighted in a statement from the Ministry of Defence.
