The International Kolkata Book Fair 2025 opened on January 28 with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and other important guests like Dr. Phillip Ackermann, the German Ambassador in India, and Dr. Marla Stuckenberg from the Goethe Institute. During the ceremony, Abul Bashar received the Guild Lifetime Literary Award from Mamata Banerjee.
This year's fair has more than 1000 book publishers and little magazines. It also includes international participation from countries like Germany, the USA, the UK, France, Russia, Nepal, and others. Famous national and international publishing houses are part of the event. The fair also honors legends like Salil Chowdhury, Ritwik Ghatak, and Max Mueller by naming gates after them.
A special event, Senior Citizen’s Day, will take place on February 4, where author Joy Goswami, publisher Ranjan Sarkar, and reader Satyabrata Ghoshal will be honored for their contributions to literature.
New features at this year's fair include the introduction of two mascot ducks, Haso and Hasi, aimed at attracting younger visitors. The fair is also launching a "Buy Books and Win a Book Library" campaign, where 15 lucky winners each day will receive Rs. 1000 in book gift coupons.
