The World Health Organization designates the JN.1 COVID-19 variant as a 'Variant of Concern.' India reports 22 cases of this variant, prompting several states to conduct review meetings. The new subvariant, which originated in the southern state, has mild symptoms, and no clustering of cases has been reported.

In response to the JN.1 variant, the Serum Institute of India, the world's largest vaccine manufacturer, is applying a license for the vaccine targeting this specific variant. The institute, known for producing the Covishield vaccine in partnership with AstraZeneca and Oxford University, may play a crucial role in preventing a potential surge.

The health ministry reports that 220.67 crore COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered in India to date. Despite concern about the new variant, the WHO emphasizes that the overall risk posed by JN.1 remains low based on current evidence.
