ISRO Chairman Somnath announced that Chandrayaan-3, the third edition of India's lunar mission, is scheduled to launch in July.
This mission follows the successful Chandrayaan-2, which is currently orbiting the Moon. Unlike its predecessor, Chandrayaan-3 will include landers and rovers and will be launched from Sriharikota's Satish Dhawan Space Centre.
The primary objective of this project is to demonstrate new technologies required for future extraterrestrial expeditions. Unlike Chandrayaan-2, which crash-landed on the Moon's surface, Chandrayaan-3 aims to achieve a soft landing.
Chandrayaan-3 is part of a series of space missions undertaken by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) as part of its exploration efforts. It aims to showcase advancements in technology that will be vital for future space exploration endeavors.
In a recent achievement, ISRO successfully placed NVS-01, the first satellite of the second-generation series, into a geosynchronous transfer orbit. This milestone was made possible by the crucial GSLV-F12 rocket, which had experienced failures in the past.
The successful launch of the NVS-01 satellite marks an important addition to India's communication satellites. These satellites have the potential to serve as alternatives to the Global Positioning System (GPS), providing precise location information for various applications, including map services and data positioning in missiles.
The latest launch by ISRO ensures the continuity of NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) services. NavIC is an Indian regional satellite navigation system, similar to GPS, that offers accurate and real-time navigation within India and a region extending up to 1,500 km around the mainland. By maintaining and enhancing this indigenous navigation system, ISRO strengthens India's self-reliance in satellite-based positioning and navigation.
Apart from Chandrayaan-3, ISRO has planned various other missions for the year, including the highly anticipated Gaganyaan mission.
These initiatives demonstrate India's growing prowess in space exploration and its commitment to expanding scientific knowledge and technological capabilities.
