Distressed Teleco Vodafone-Idea lost 1.8 million more subscribers as it’s slowly losing its place in the Indian telecom space


Reliance Jio has maintained the lead position in the Indian telecom space as the telecom giant added a massive 4.2 million new subscribers in June 2022, over 5 times more than the 0.79 million added by Airtel. 

Distressed Teleco Vodafone-Idea lost 1.8 million more subscribers as it’s slowly losing its place in the Indian telecom space. After the reports of June, Jio's total subscriber base stands at 413 million subscribers, with Airtel standing at 363 million while Vodafone-Idea's user base shrank to 257 million. 

State-owned networks MTNL and BSNL also reported a loss of subscribers as BSNL lost around 1 million subscribers while MTNL reported a marginal loss. With the additions during the month, Jio and Airtel have improved their existing market share to 36% & 31.6% respectively while the same of Vi has contracted to 22.4%. BSNL and MTNL stood at 9.72% and 0.28% respectively at the end of the month. 

For the first quarter of FY23, Reliance added 9 million subscribers while Airtel 2.6 million. However, Vodafone lost over 4 million customers. However, for the first 6 months of CY22, Airtel was the leader and added around 7 million subscribers. 

Nationally, India's mobile user base grew 0.16% to 1.147 billion while overall wireless teledensity registered a marginal growth during the month to 83.27% in June. Moreover, there was a 0.33 million net increase in wireline subscribers, taking the total to 25.57 million. 

Reliance Jio is not a listed entity, but the IPO of the same is expected very soon. Vodafone currently trades around Rs 8.9 per share while Airtel trades around Rs 732.75 per share.
