Justice BR Gavai to Become Chief Justice of India on May 14
Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai will take over as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI) on May 14, 2025. He will replace Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who is set to retire on May 13. The appointment follows the traditional seniority system used by the Supreme Court.
Who is Justice BR Gavai?
Justice Gavai was born on November 24, 1961, in Maharashtra. He studied law at Government Law College in Mumbai and started his legal career as an advocate in 1985. Over the years, he served as a judge in the Bombay High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019.
Justice Gavai comes from a Dalit background and will be only the second Dalit judge in India's history to become Chief Justice of India. The first was Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, who served from 2007 to 2010.
How is the Chief Justice of India Appointed?
The Chief Justice of India is appointed by the President of India, based on the recommendation of the outgoing Chief Justice. This tradition, known as the “seniority rule,” means the most senior Supreme Court judge is usually chosen.
