On February 12, 2025, millions of devotees arrived in Prayagraj for the holy occasion of Magh Purnima, marking a significant day in the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela. Devotees flocked to the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati river, to take a holy dip as part of this important ritual.
Record-Breaking Devotees
As of now, over 4.88 crore devotees have taken part in the holy bath at the Sangam, according to official data. The day was made even more special as Kalpvasis (devotees who observe a period of spiritual discipline near the sacred river) began their return after completing their ritual. The Saryu river in Ayodhya also saw devotees coming to take a dip, and many visited the Shree Ram Temple after their bath.
Security Arrangements and Restrictions
The Uttar Pradesh government, led by CM Yogi Adityanath, has made extensive security arrangements for the event. The chief minister himself is overseeing the safety of the devotees, ensuring that the large crowd remains orderly. In addition, the government has deployed around 100 more IAS and PCS officers to assist with crowd management.
To manage the large influx of devotees, Prayagraj authorities have declared the area around the Maha Kumbh site as a ‘no vehicle zone’ for the day. This move is aimed at preventing traffic congestion and ensuring smooth access for the devotees.
Kalpvas: A Tradition of Spirituality and Purification
Today also marks the conclusion of Kalpvas, a significant tradition of the Maha Kumbh Mela. Devotees who had spent several days or weeks near the riverbanks in a state of spiritual discipline, self-reflection, and purification will now conclude their period of devotion. Kalpvas is seen as a spiritually enriching practice, considered highly auspicious during the Kumbh Mela.
Sant Ravidas Jayanti Celebrations
Along with Magh Purnima, the day also marks the celebration of Sant Ravidas Jayanti, a festival honoring the revered saint and poet. In light of this, the Uttar Pradesh government has declared a public holiday today.
