In a recent announcement from the Transport Department of Uttarakhand, a new green cess has been introduced for vehicles, aimed at promoting environmental sustainability. Under the new scheme, three-wheelers and light motor vehicles (LMVs) will now incur a charge of Rs 20 and Rs 40 respectively. Meanwhile, medium and heavy motor vehicles are set to face higher charges of Rs 60 and Rs 80. The initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce pollution and encourage using environmentally friendly transportation options.

However, the department has also specified a list of exemptions to ensure that essential services and activities are not adversely affected. Notably, two-wheelers, government vehicles, emergency response vehicles such as fire tenders and ambulances, Army vehicles, and vehicles used for agricultural purposes will not be subject to the green cess. This move is aimed at minimizing the financial burden on these crucial sectors while still advancing the agenda of environmental conservation.

To accommodate vehicles from other states, the Transport Department has introduced flexible payment options for the green cess. Visitors can opt for a one-time entry fee at the prescribed rate for a single day. For those requiring longer stays, paying 20 times the standard rate for three months or 60 times for an annual pass is available. This tiered system is designed to offer flexibility to out-of-state vehicles while ensuring that the environmental objectives of the green cess are met across a broader spectrum of the vehicular population.
