Nissan, the Japanese automaker, announced on Wednesday that it is discontinuing the Datsun brand in India. This comes 9 years after the company initiated the global relaunch of the brand.

Though It played innings of nine years, the brand proved unable to complete its own ambitions in India.

Not only has Datsun failed in India but Nissan had also already discontinued the brand in Russia and Indonesia in 2020. It is interesting to note that Russia and Indonesia were considered to be the key markets for the brand. A consideration that proved false.

Nissan is focusing on core models and segments that benefit customers, dealer partners, and the business as part of its global transformation strategy. This includes the all-new, locally produced Nissan Magnite, which has received over 100,000 customer orders in India to date," Nissan India said in a statement.

Nissan stated in its global transformation plan that it would exit the Datsun business in Russia and streamline operations in some ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) markets. It had also announced a halt to manufacturing operations in Indonesia.

And now, the Datsun brand is going to be discontinued in India. "Production of Datsun Redi-GO has already ceased at the Chennai plant", stated Nissan India, "The sales of the model will still continue though"

Though it is going to be stopped here in India, "We can reassure all current and future Datsun owners that customers' satisfaction remains our top priority, and we will keep providing the highest level of after-sales service, parts provision, and warranty support through our national dealership network," the company added.
