A unique shift is being witnessed in consumers' ordering habits as people have begun comparing the prices of food on different platforms these days.

This trend of comparing prices was seen on Twitter as people have been complaining about extravagant prices charged by delivery giants like Swiggy and Zomato. The main reason for comparing these prices is the government's e-commerce network ONDC.

For the unversed, ONDC is the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) which was established by the Indian government. It is maintained by the DPIIT under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce and is a PSU. This network was developed by the government to ensure fair competition and disrupt the excess authority abused by giant companies.

It has been observed by several Twitterati that the prices for the same food items from the same vendor on ONDC was 15-20% lower than the prices offered by Zomato and Swiggy, which ended up sparking a major price comparison trend.

Interestingly, the network is able to provide these discounts as it does not operate in a manner similar to Zomato Or Swiggy. The network uses 3 apps to process each order: a buyer app, a seller app and a logistics app which will be delivering the order. Many times, the orders on the network are free of packaging and delivery charges, thereby making it significantly cheaper.

Food delivery on the platform has seen a significant spike as the platform is now averaging close to 10,000 orders on a daily basis. It is now believed that the network is capable of disrupting the business of Zomato and Swiggy.

DPIIT Secretary Rajesh Singh has stated that the network is inclusive and will not be a competition for any e-commerce company. He was adamant in the point that the network did not aim to render any company out of business.
