Devastating Terror Attack Rocks Pahalgam, Kashmir
A horrific terror attack in Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir, has left at least 26 people dead and many more injured. This shocking event, unfolding on Tuesday afternoon, marks one of the deadliest attacks in the Valley since the 2019 Pulwama strike and has sent shockwaves across India and the world.
The Attack and its Aftermath
Terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists at Baisaran, a picturesque meadow known as "mini Switzerland," killing mostly holidaymakers from other Indian states, as well as two foreign nationals from the UAE and Nepal. The swift and brutal nature of the attack, where tourists were reportedly questioned about their religion before being shot, has fueled widespread outrage and condemnation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi immediately cut short his visit to Saudi Arabia to return to India and address the crisis.
Victims and Response
Among the victims was Corporal Tage Hailyang of the Indian Air Force, tragically shot dead in front of his newlywed wife after being questioned about his religion. The Indian government has announced an ex gratia payment of ₹10 lakh for each deceased's family and financial aid for the injured. Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Srinagar to meet with grieving families and survivors, while the National Investigation Agency (NIA) joined the investigation. Sketches of the suspected terrorists have been released.
Responsibility Claimed and International Reaction
The Resistance Front (TRF), a shadow group linked to the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack. The incident has drawn international condemnation, with several countries, including the Maldives and China, expressing condolences and support for India. The attack also raises serious concerns about the safety of tourists, particularly with the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage approaching.
Ongoing Investigation and Security Measures
The investigation is underway, with initial reports suggesting the involvement of seven terrorists, including several possibly from Pakistan. Security forces are on high alert, with increased deployments and investigations to apprehend the perpetrators. The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in the region and the urgent need for a comprehensive strategy to combat terrorism.
