Ahead of Army Day, Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi made strong remarks on Pakistan’s role in fomenting violence in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). Labeling Pakistan as the "epicentre of terrorism," General Dwivedi detailed the progress made in controlling the situation in the Union Territory, emphasizing the region’s positive shift from "terrorism to tourism."

Pakistan's Role in J&K Violence

General Dwivedi accused Pakistan of orchestrating violence in J&K. He revealed that 60% of the terrorists eliminated last year were of Pakistani origin. “The remaining elements of terrorism in the Kashmir Valley and Jammu are still heavily dominated by individuals of Pakistani origin, accounting for 80% of current threats,” he said.

The Army Chief also highlighted the intact terror infrastructure on the Pakistani side, which continues to support infiltration and violence. Despite these challenges, he assured that the situation in J&K is "firmly under control," with reduced violence parameters across the region.

India-Pakistan Border Tensions and Ceasefire

General Dwivedi acknowledged that the 2021 ceasefire agreement between the Indian and Pakistani armies along the Line of Control (LoC) remains largely intact. However, infiltration attempts from the Pakistani side persist, undermining peace efforts.

In 2021, the Indian and Pakistani armies recommitted to the 2003 ceasefire agreement, marking a significant move toward reducing border tensions. This agreement has helped stabilize the LoC, although threats of terrorism remain active.

Improvements in Security and Tourism in J&K

The Army Chief underlined the transformation of J&K, with increased security enabling a notable shift from "terrorism to tourism." He highlighted several positive indicators, including:

  • The successful conduct of the 2024 Amarnath Yatra, which saw participation from over five lakh pilgrims.

  • Peaceful elections with nearly 60% voter turnout, reflecting the local population's desire for peace and stability.

  • A surge in tourism as a result of reduced violence.

General Dwivedi stated, “The peaceful conduct of elections and an increase in tourism are clear signs of a positive change in the region.”

Increased Troop Deployment and Recruitment

To strengthen security in J&K, the Indian Army inducted 15,000 additional troops in 2024. This deployment has been instrumental in bringing down violence levels and ensuring the safety of civilians and visitors.

The local population’s support for peace is evident from the high voter turnout in the parliamentary and state assembly elections, a significant development in a region historically marred by conflict.

Challenges in the Fight Against Terrorism

Despite progress, challenges persist. Recent months have witnessed increased terrorist activities, particularly in North Kashmir and the Doda-Kishtwar belt. The Army Chief pointed out that these areas remain hotspots for militant operations, though overall violence is decreasing.

General Dwivedi reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to eliminating these threats, ensuring safety, and supporting J&K’s journey toward peace and development.

Conclusion

General Upendra Dwivedi’s remarks shed light on the current situation in J&K and the ongoing struggle against terrorism. His emphasis on Pakistan’s role in supporting violence underscores the need for continued vigilance and action. However, the positive trends in tourism and local engagement reflect a hopeful future for the region.

As J&K transitions from a conflict zone to a peaceful destination, the Indian Army’s efforts, combined with the resilience of its people, are paving the way for a brighter and more stable tomorrow.
