PM Modi Marks 10 Years of Mudra Yojana with Beneficiaries
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the 10th anniversary of the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) with a special virtual interaction with beneficiaries from across the country. The conversation took place on April 8, the same day the scheme was launched a decade ago in 2015.
The event celebrated the success of one of India’s most influential financial inclusion programs, aimed at helping small business owners, self-employed individuals, and first-time entrepreneurs access funds without collateral.
What is the Mudra Yojana?
The Mudra Yojana, short for Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency, was introduced by the central government on April 8, 2015. Its goal is to provide collateral-free loans to individuals and small businesses in the non-agricultural sector.
Over the past ten years, the scheme has funded millions of micro-enterprises, boosting income generation, job creation, and grassroots-level entrepreneurship in both urban and rural India.
Categories of Mudra Loans:
-
Shishu – Up to ₹50,000 for new businesses
-
Kishor – ₹50,000 to ₹5 lakh for growing businesses
-
Tarun – ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh for established small enterprises
PM Modi Applauds Small Entrepreneurs
During the interaction, PM Modi listened to stories from various beneficiaries, especially women, youth, and individuals from underprivileged communities, who shared how the scheme helped them start or expand their businesses.
“Mudra Yojana is more than just a loan program. It is a platform to fulfill dreams and empower ordinary citizens to become job creators,” Modi said.
He emphasized how the scheme has created opportunities in sectors like tailoring, food stalls, retail, vehicle services, and more—especially in small towns and rural regions.
Focus on Empowering Women and Marginalized Groups
A large share of the loans issued under Mudra Yojana have gone to women entrepreneurs and individuals from SC, ST, and OBC categories. This aligns with the government’s broader mission of inclusive growth and economic independence.
“These 10 years of Mudra Yojana reflect India’s entrepreneurial spirit,” PM Modi added. “People who once depended on jobs are now offering jobs to others.”
A Step Toward Self-Reliant India
PM Modi also connected the success of Mudra Yojana to the Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) mission. He noted that empowering micro-businesses is a key strategy for building a strong and self-sustaining economy.
The celebration ended with PM Modi encouraging more people to take advantage of the Mudra Yojana and consider entrepreneurship as a pathway to progress.
