In a shocking turn of events, a simple request for food and water led to the arrest of 37-year-old Dattatray Ramdas Gade, the accused in the Pune bus rape case. Gade had been on the run after allegedly assaulting a 26-year-old woman inside a state transport bus at Pune’s Swargate bus station in the early hours of Tuesday.

How the Accused Was Caught

Despite an extensive police search operation using drones and sniffer dogs, Gade initially managed to evade arrest. However, his hunger and thirst ultimately led to his capture.

According to Pune police, Gade approached a local family in Gunat village and asked for food and water. The family, unaware of his identity at first, provided him with a water bottle but later informed the police about his presence. This crucial tip-off helped police track him down in a nearby paddy field in Shirur tehsil, where he was arrested around midnight.

A History of Crime

Gade is a history-sheeter with multiple cases of theft, robbery, and chain-snatching registered against him in Pune and Ahilyanagar districts. He had been out on bail since 2019 in one of these cases.

Police Investigation and Legal Action

Pune police have stated that a ligature mark was found on Gade’s neck, suggesting a possible suicide attempt. Authorities plan to fast-track the case and appoint a special counselor for the victim.

Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar confirmed that Gade would be presented in court soon, and a special investigation team would be formed to ensure justice is served swiftly.
