Reliance Jio, led by the billionaire Mukesh Ambani gained 29.4 lakh mobile subscribers in July 2022, as per data released by the telecom regulator TRAI on September 15, taking its mobile customer count to 41.59 crores.

While, Bharti Airtel, led by Sunil Mittal took its consumer base to 36.34 crores by adding 5.13 lakh subscribers in the month of July. Vodafone Idea lost 12.42 lakh, wireless subscribers, taking its consumer base to 15.42 crore.

The market share of JIO and Airtel in the mobile phone users segment stood at 36.23 % and 31.33 % respectively, while Vodafone Idea’s market share decreased to 22.22 %. Overall, TRAI data showed that India's total wireless subscribers count increased marginally to 114.8 crores at the end of July 2022.

Urban areas showed an increase in wireless subscriptions, taking the count to 62.6 crores for the month of July, while subscriptions in rural markets decreased to 52.1 crores.

Jio dominated the broadband internet market, holding 52.29 % share followed by Bharti Airtel with 27.51%, Vodafone Idea with 15.23%, and BSNL with 3.13% of the overall customers.

The private service providers hold a 90.12 % market share in the wireless segment, while the PSU access service providers namely BSNL and MTNL, had a market share of only 9.88%.  The telecom regulator, TRAI informed that they would come out with a number of recommendations to promote India as a data center hub along with support from the central government.

"India must become a leader in data centers, and data going outside the country should be prevented," a top Trai official said.
